Description CranioSacral Therapy, or Craniopathy, is an extremely gentle yet powerful therapy that aims to restore a balanced symmetrical movement to the fascia throughout the body. The fascia is a membranous structure that surrounds every organ, muscle and tissue throughout the body.

We are all familiar with the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Like them, the craniosacral system also influences many body functions. An imbalance in this system can adversely affect the brain and spinal cord which can result in sensory, motor and intellectual dysfunction.

The name "CranioSacral" is derived from the system's associated bones. Included are those of the skull face and mouth, which make up the cranium, and of the spinal column which extends down to the sacrum. Membranes surround the brain, extend down the spinal cord and enclose the hydraulic system pumping the cerebrospinal fluid around. The movement of these membrane is what is termed the craniosacral rhythm.

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive technique. Seldom does the therapist apply pressure in excess of five grams, the equivalent weight of a British twenty pence piece.

Examination is done by testing for movement in various parts of the system. Often, when the testing is completed, the restriction has been removed and the system is able to self-correct. A craniosacral therapy session involves a light touch of the therapist mainly along the spine or cranium which assists the hydraulic forces within the craniosacral system to improve the internal environment and hence improve health.

Trained therapists are able to palpate the motion of the craniosacral system anywhere on the body. It is easiest to palpate the craniosacral rhythm via the bones of the skull and sacrum because they attach to the membranes which actually enclose the cerebrospinal fluid. Palpation is also possible via all the bones of the spine and pelvis and via the facial bones but, because of their less direct connection with the hydraulic system, it is more difficult to detect the motion.

Because each of us produces our own different reactions to trauma, stress and loss of healing capacity, we each present our own unique combinations of ailments, pains and dysfunctions. And, because CranioSacral Therapy helps clear the way for our self-healing mechanisms to be more effective, its scope is very wide indeed.

Some of the more common difficulties that CranioSacral Therapy may help are chronic pain, reduced mobility or stiff joints, low energy, headaches and migraines, jaw problems, neuralgia, learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyscalclia, menstrual and menopausal problems and clumsiness.

In new-borns, infants and children, colic, hyperactivity, feeding and sleeping problems and faulty development are often helped by CranioSacral Therapy. Routine evaluation of new-borns often reveals and permits the easy release of subtle strains and restrictions that may, if left, lead to chronic dysfunction later in life. This applies not only where the birth has been difficult, but also with "normal" deliveries.

We practise Upledger, CCST and Karuna styles of CranioSacral Therapy and also the original Cottam Craniopathic adjustments which were the forerunner of all other cranial techniques.

4. Still Waters Craniosacral Therapy
I'm Steve Lane, a Craniosacral Therapist based in Brighton and Lewes. Craniosacral Therapy is a way of listening to the body with an understanding that there is an intelligence in each of us with a profound potential for healing, balance and transformation. Listening to the story of our bodies and to how this intelligence has guided us through life can be hugely empowering, giving us new perspectives of how we hold our posture, our experiences, our sense of self and the world around us.

In clinical practice, I have several years experience in helping support people with a variety of chronic and acute conditions including pain and injuries, neurological conditions, immune disorders and in supporting psychological/emotional wellbeing.
